Before you got into YouTube, who was Jade? Did you envision your life to be the way it is now?
I don’t even know how to answer that because YouTube is one thing but prior to YouTube, I had somewhat of a presence on social media. In 2006, my twin sister and I had a lot of fake accounts of us. The first few YouTube videos I ever posted were videos talking about my real page and which ones weren’t. At the time of graduating high school, I was just going to college. I didn’t have a vision of what I wanted to do with my life. My first few followers recognized me as one of the Kendle twins. At that time, I didn’t know what the hell I was going to do with my life. It wasn’t until 2016 when I decided I was going to do my YouTube fulltime. Prior to that, I finished undergrad, took a year off and I focused in on the business aspect of YouTube. Before LipsticknCurls, I was a student leader who was very engaged in the community, very engaged on current social issues. I was passionate and still am on women’s rights, civil rights, and conversations on race and gender. I wanted to specifically work with students that came from communities of color and those that may not have the same access of others. I was very involved and aware. I would say that I’m still that person.
What do you believe makes talking in front of the camera comfortable to you?
I imagine that I’m just talking to a person. I won’t say that I’ve never been shy being in front of people though. I grew up playing the violin and I used to get so nervous when I was about to perform. I remember thinking when I was little that I would much rather just talk. I was a shy girl who would rather just talk instead of playing the violin. From that, I grew up being okay with being in front of people because I performed and in high school I was in different step/dance teams. In college, I joined a sorority, I’m a Delta and I was chapter President so I was always leading the stroll line. All of those experiences made me comfortable in front of a camera and also doing YouTube for seven, almost eight years now. Years of me watching and hearing myself really helped me refine myself.
What does beauty mean to you? Other than looking good, how does doing your makeup and hair make you feel?
That’s huge for me. My passion for beauty comes from the inner aspect of it, the point of self-love. When we change our exteriors, it’s obviously a reaction of how we’re feeling on the inside. If you feel good inside, you want to do good things for your outside as well. That’s how I approach beauty. I am not going to do my hair or put on an outfit that I don’t believe showcases my best self. To me, beauty is about obviously diversity. Many people try to do the same trend but it may not showcase who you really are. Now, we’re in a space where we can really expand and showcase different aspects of what beauty can be and how personal it can be.
Who are you outside of YouTube? What do you like to do in your free time?
I love spending time with my family and friends. I also just got a dog a few months ago and he is my life! I love reading, still very much an intellectual that goes along with me going to school to receive my Master’s. I have a guilty pleasure of watching Real Housewives of Orange County. Those are things I enjoy doing outside of YouTube but I’m very much so who I am online. Who I appear on social media is exactly who I am on real life.
What are some long term goals you have?
I definitely want to be an author, I’ve always wanted to do it. I want to work in entertainment, specifically being a host on The Real or The Talk.
